What people actually run locally — inspectable defaults instead of a vendor NLE subscription.

	Kdenlive is a full non-linear editor (multi-track, effects, keyframes, many formats) — a practical Premiere / Final Cut / Vegas alternative on GNU/Linux and elsewhere. Ongoing work targets the dope-sheet gap so FLOSS editing keeps pace with commercial workflows.
	OpenShot is a lighter NLE for cuts, titles, and simple animation. Fine for standard edits; weaker on hardware acceleration and long-session stability than Kdenlive.
	Shotcut is another accessible NLE with templates and a calmer UI — similar class to OpenShot, not the first choice for heavy grading.
	VLC is a player, not an NLE, yet it still replaces a surprising amount of “open in Premiere to shift subtitles”: retiming, filters, transcode, and streaming via broad FFmpeg coverage.
	OBS Studio is capture and live encode for tutorials, talks, and games. Commercial forks add chat shops; OBS remains the inspectable core most FLOSS live paths (including Owncast) start from.
	Cutie Roto is a standalone segmentation GUI for rotoscoping masks (export as image sequence). Open analogues of After Effects Roto Brush / DaVinci Magic Mask that can track newer networks instead of a vendor’s frozen brush.
