A class of ~25 plus one teacher currently pastes article links into WhatsApp and maybe a Discord “homework” channel. They need threads and a class-only board, not another chat app (messaging).
Run Lemmy for the school (self-host). lemmy.hacktivism.ch shows that self-hosting is possible; it is not a pupil enrolment instance.

Do not federate a class community to the open Fediverse unless the school’s legal/staff policy says so. Minors, consent, and closed classes come first (Saura et al. 2026 on the schools page).
